I got my XL LTE Dual sim off eBay as an 'international unlocked' version, RM-1096. I know that updates are 'carrier specific', but I assume those are tied to the carrier who's firmware is loaded on the phone, vs my sim cards.

Long story short, do you think the 'unlocked international' version I have will get updates? Specifically to Windows 10? I'd be rather bummer if my firmware never got upgraded.

Where updates come from is determined by the Manufacturer Name and Mobile Operator, both of which you can find in Extras+Info.

The Manufacturer Name identifies the specific variant of your phone.
If Mobile Operator is 000-xx (000-US, 000-GB, etc) then Microsoft is responsible for your updates.
If it shows some more specific thing such as ATT-US then the carrier is responsible.

Whether or not an unbranded phone gets updates faster than carrier branded is not well known. It depends whether Microsoft builds a generic firmware, then carriers tweak it (meaning unbranded would get it first), or whether Microsoft gets the carriers to test it first and then releases a generic version once all carriers in a region have signed off on it.

Thanks for the reply, that certainly makes sense. My phone is showing as 000-HK as the Mobile Operator and RM-1096_1001 as the Manufacturing Name. If I am understanding your response correctly, that would put MS responsible for updates. I'm not concerned about WHEN I get the updates, as much as I am concerned IF I will get the updates. But it sounds like they'll still push updates for my phone, just depends on timing. As far as you can tell, I should get the updates at some time, correct?

I have just purchased the same phone from expansys in Canada, dual sim is working great with a rogers and telus simcard. pretty happy with the phone and it saves me carrying 2 phones around when I'm working.
