Update crashes

Is there a way to regain photos from a phone that is infinitely crashing while trying to update?

Yesterday my Lumia 930 started an automatic update, to or from version 10.0.14393.448. After a while the screen went black with a white :-( emoticon. A few seconds later it restarted, showed the gears from the update process, but after a few seconds the :-( emoticon again appeared. This process now continues in an infinite loop, meaning that I cannot start/use my phone anymore.

After searching on the internet I found that the most common advice is to do a hard reset, which will wipe the entire disk. As I don't want all my photos sent to a public cloud I disabled the backup to Onedrive. Instead I normally make weekly manual backups to my personal cloud. The last month I have been renovating my new home and made some important pictures of the cabling etc., which I really don't want to loose. Is there any way to regain those pictures? These are worth to me more than my phone is worth, so I'm open to any suggestion.

Thanks in advance!

your device is bricked i believe, for few users the update continued after they removed the battery and inserted it back again. Also could you recall that the device had a healthy charge when you left it for updating?

Thanks for the suggestions! @abhishek singh21, I don't have a screwdriver at the moment that is needed to remove the battery. So I drained the battery, hoping it would have the same effect. The update doesn't continue though. Will try to get my hands on a good set of screwdrivers. The device didn't have a lot of charge left when it started updating, so I plugged it in when I noticed it started updating.

@arjan wolthuis: connecting to my PC didn't work, it doesn't show up in File Explorer.

Thanks for the suggestions both! @abhishek singh21, I tried removing the battery but I don't have the correct screwdriver at the moment. Drained the battery and booted again, trying to simulate removing the battery, without effect. The device wasn't fully charged when the update started, but as soon as I saw it updating I plugged it in. Possibly that was already too late...

@arjan wolthuis: connecting to the PC doesn't work, it's not recognized as a hard drive while starting up or updating.

Is it possible to connect the storage of the phone to another phone or another device, so it could be read? Or is there another option that doesn't need a working OS on the phone? I will try getting some screwdrivers to reconnect the battery meanwhile.

Thanks in advance!

I mean in device manger. Like "QHUSB.XXX or something similar. Didn't you get an Windows USB notification?. Also. Do NOT try to flash with WDRT at this point. I've had the exact same problem like you. I tried to flash my Lumia 640 and that got it killed forever. Because it was constantly rebooting itself

As for your pictures. I am trying to find a way to get them out of the phone :)
But what happened is you got an failed update and your OS is corrupted. That's why it shows the
:-(. It's an "blue screen of death" So I can't guarantee you that you will get your photos back

Hi Arjan,

Thanks for helping. Received a Windows USB notification once, but it failed recognizing the device. I see two "Generic USB Hub" devices listed under "Universal Serial Bus Controller", that could be the phone or some other device.
