Updates on Windows RT

I don't know if this is common knowledge on these forums or not, so sorry if it's a dumb question.

When new a new Windows OS comes out (ex. Vista, 7, 8), you have to pay to upgrade to the new OS on full Windows devices.

So, my question is, will the Surface 2 and other RT devices have to pay to update to Windows 9 when it comes out?

We don't know since RT is so new and the update work MS is doing with 8.1 and Update 1 is unprecedented since previous service pack updates were primarily under-the-hood fixes and others patches. Looks like 8.x updates will be free obviously, but regarding 9, we can't really tell.

My hope is when windows 9 comes out, Microsoft will merge RT and WP like rumored, and the devices running that will get free updates. Fingers crossed!
