Upgrading phone

I have a Lumia900 on AT&T, and work pays for my cell. I am not eligible for an upgrade until May 2014.

If I bought an 8x or any other unlocked WP8 say via Amazon wireless I can just swap the sim card from my Lumia900 to the 8x without calling/notifying AT&T or anything, correct? And it will work normally?
