Verizon XLTE

I believe XLTE is just a marketing term and isn't an actually technological specification. Similar to how t-mobile's faster HSPA+ became 4g even though HSPA is 3G.

Does the cell indicator change to say "XLTE" or does it just say "LTE" still?

Yes. It is a marketing term. It sounds better than just saying AWS which is what it really is. It's just LTE on a different frequency band that allows for faster throughput. Kind of like the difference between 802.11ac and 802.11b/g/n; both are Wi-Fi just working in different frequency bands.

Is there a way to tell (other than doing a speed check every so often) if you are connected via band 4 (1700/2100 MHz) and band 13 (700MHz)?

More out of curiosity than anything.

Had a sweet XLTE experience Saturday. Shot a video of my son's race, about a quarter gigabyte. Uploaded it in <5m @ 70mbps and sent the coach a link

I'm getting 19 down, 14.5 up in NYC, was expecting higher down speed, oh well...."1st world problems" I guess

Looks like VZW finally turned on the AWS here in Hawaii. This test was run from the west side of Honolulu near Pearl Harbor.

At first I thought I had connected to a WiFi network. Now if I could get this at my house.

Ok. So Honolulu is on the list, but I am definitely NOT getting XLTE speeds. I can barely get LTE speeds at times. But historically, Hawaii has always been in the bottom when it comes to internet speeds. As for XLTE, it says Honolulu, but Honolulu is a fairly spread out city. I was on the east end near Pearl Harbor this morning and barely got LTE speeds. If I were to go downtown towards Waikiki, I would probably get higher speeds.
On a positive note. You live in Hawaii.
