I'm currently bent on completing my Studio Ghibli marathon starting with Nausica? of the Valley of the Wind.
It's strange how I've never finished a Ghibli movie before.

Dried Azkui beans or plastic pellets are the most common filings for Otedama.
時々ときどき、乾燥かんそうした いろいろな種たねや 米こめつぶや 貝かいも 使つかわれます.
Sometimes, various dried seeds, rice grains and shells have been used.

While playing, one can juggle anywhere from 2 -5 Otedama.

When I typed "otedama," I came up with this:

Could you care to explain how there are extra characters in what I quote below?

Ah, I just realized that I haven't, well, befriended you all here.
I recognize that it is just a symbolic gesture, considering that it does practically nothing because of the archaic friends system, but these sorts of gestures mean something, no?

おてだま = お手玉
The first part as you know is all hiragana, and the second part is how it looks when written with kanji. Japanese uses kanji (originally Chinese characters) to replace certain hiragana letters. Sometimes whole words can be written in kanji. The easiest way to tell if its Japanese or Chinese you're reading is to look for Japanese hiragana. Very, very rarely, you'll find a whole sentence in Japanese exclusively in kanji because of their use of connecting particles.
The asterisks don't mean anything. I just copied an pasted the speech from another document.
And no. That signature stays for as long as I own a Nexus 5.
