Sadly, there are a lot of schools that under educate their students. Especially in sex education and science.
Then you have home schooling as well. Not that all home schooling is bad but a lot is.

Even in our world of information at our finger tips, we still have high levels of ignorance.
I could state why I think that is but I don't want to get banned.
The other thing is that most people don't put technology to good use. We mostly use it these days for entertainment purposes rather than learning. Heck, even on here where a simple search could answer a question we get people posting questions instead simply because it's easier. I'd use the term lazy...

I'll have to find the articles but there's a few that talk about the ignorance of science in many adults. Simple questions like 'How long does the earth take to go around the sun?' You'd be surprised how many people get that wrong.
Most students don't get to choose. Their parents do that for them so from a young age they grow up not knowing any better.
