I didn't realize that the Surface is aware its kickstand is open/close until I was playing with the Type Cover 2 earlier. When I close the kickstand, the backlight (of the Type Cover 2) extinguishes, open the kickstand and the backlight lights up. I feel like an idtiot amused by this.
