WC 1M Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

The thing was that I always liked the 10. It just was too expensive. It was very sad to see T-Mobile EOL'd it in the same amount of time it did the Lumia 810. At least, as with other variants on that carrier before it, their version of the 10 is easy to convert to factory unlocked.

I'll do that after I get it restored.

I agree about the price. Looking forward to it.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Haha thanks. I'm planning out my work for class and what I need to do.

I'm overthinking about life stuff and tech stuff. I don't know if I want to keep this tablet, I'm having second thoughts. I love the idea of separation but it seems better to possibly have another phone to do the same idea. I'll rather do that. The other phone probably wouldn't be used as a phone.

I don't love the idea of getting a new bag just to possibly fit a tablet. It's funny, I can overthink stuff and be indecisive but on the other hand, I can also be impulsive.

Can't really talk about the life stuff because it's personal.
I too have given up one the idea of finding a suitable replacement for my Z3 tablet compact, so the Mi Mix 2 will step into that role.

Very interesting how design language has changed...the Pixel 2 is a little bit smaller than the 10, which in turn is a little bit aller than the Mix 2. Give the engineers credit: going 18:9 is an interesting way to manage the screen real estate.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

I like the key two. They used the chip I hoped they would. The 6GB RAM is a welcome addition. I don't like the price though. They should have kept it at $549, maybe $599 max.

Couldn't agree more. Though when you consider the battery life, dual camera setup and security features and compare it to other phones with the same features at much higher prices, maybe it ain't so bad.

Which is why if it started at $599, I could stomach it better. At $649 though...that's too tough to swallow.

I agree on all points. I had no idea you were doing this too, that's really good to know. Please keep me posted on how that goes. The 18:9 thing really changes everything now.

Also, I have been waiting on your thoughts about the Key2. That's a valid point about the price, as they seem to be following OnePlus in that regard.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

I'm thinking of getting a phone that is still somewhat small in size but with the new aspect ratio (so this means more on the screen!) instead of the tablet. The tablet is good but having to get a bigger bag to properly support it is not for me.

I'm considering a LG Q6 or Essential Phone. I don't want to use it as a phone but as a pretty dedicated device. The Essential Phone is heavy but has better specs over the Q6. The Q6 actually has all of the same specs as the tablet I have currently so it looks interesting to me as an option.

Edit: I typed this out before I saw MIA's response. So basically tl;dr, it's between the Q6 or Essential Phone since I'll be living in 5 reading apps.
Andy's phone is vastly superior to the Q6 in every level. It is my kind of phone...heavy with a solid build. Even though I used 8.1 briefly and the phone felt vastly better...you're going to have to balance price with comfort and other things for what you want.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I deleted my post originally because I realized that you said you do a similar thing way after the fact. I really wish that I can feel the weight of the Essential without buying it. I plan to go secondhand either way because it doesn't feel right for me to spend phone money (like a regular amount of money that is, not some crazy deal) on a thing I am using just for reading.

You are right though about the specs. Something annoying here is that I can possibly find the Essential cheaper than the Q6, which doesn't make sense and both are generally more expensive than my tablet was, which makes this challenging.

Swappa has the Q6 for $150, so I suppose that's the cheaper of the two. Just be prepared to be able to sell it if you don't like it.

Yep, there's that too (having to sell), I'll check it out. I don't know if I feel like selling. I have to look at Swappa trends to see how often they sell. Starting school hasn't totally slowed this down for me but it has me made feel wary if I have something that I'll have to sell (since I'll have days when I can't ship anything, thanks to class). The time it took to attempt to move the A3 has me thinking about if I'll like to go through that again.

It's not easy at all. It's for me what also has taken the fun out of wheeling and dealing. The market is too saturated and is tricky to unload "mistakes".

I totally forgot that you would know about this with the devices you have and have had, and I agree. Ugh.
I was shocked to see that the Sony Xperia XZ2C seems to be moving on Swappa. Not as hot as a iPhone, but still somewhat hot for what it is. It blows my mind that listings for it are selling pretty fast.

I suppose there are still people who like small phones like you but with comparatively less constraints as yours. Then again, the XZ2C is likely cheaper than the Pixel 3 when released.

That's a valid point. One listing that was interesting to me was that one of the sellers there actually bought it from someone else on Swappa and was able to sell it pretty quick.

I kind of wish I had less constraints sometimes. That would probably make my life a little easier.

Edit: Speaking of it, I would generally agree with this review (not on the battery life thing though). It makes kind of wish that I didn't have the media randomly stopping problem.

The issue with Sony has been they still feel that they're smarter than everyone else...and that it's the 2000s when the K750i and P990i were killing everyone. Sony used to take great pictures in those days. Now, you've got to fight with the camera app more than you should. While I'm not a fan of the Apple/Google/Samsung way of making auto mode so easy to use, there are times I too want to point and shoot and get results with little effort.

It feels like if I could have Sony's codec support + HTC's auto mode and audio + LG's wide angle and video controls + Nokia's stock build + Moto's Moto actions in they body of Andy's phone, I'd be OK.

The fact that I had to list that is an issue because it shows how niche these OEMs have gotten and how some of those compromises doesn't make as much sense as they seem.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

From a daily driver setting, here's where I'm at:

I don't use a Samsung as they don't update their devices software wise as their skin is so heavy. I don't use a HTC because they don't update their devices software wise because they lack the manpower to do so. I don't use Andy's phone because the radios don't run the way I like for calls to justify the no headphone jack and so-so camera app.

I don't use a Sony because they're still too stubborn with the camera apps. I'll never use a OnePlus again because I don't like how they treat their customers. I don't use a Xiaomi because in the devices they have with proper radio support, the camera isn't as strong as it should be. I don't use an LG as they don't update their devices as much as they should. I won't use a Huawei because their video camera capabilities are garbage and they're arrogant in addressing customer concerns while chasing Apple and Samsung.

I don't use a Moto because Lenovo is clueless and for a brand running AOSP, they don't update their devices. ZTE doesn't have anything compelling I'd look at. I don't use Apple because I have to stomach enough fruit for work and their platform has enough issues as is.

I'm concerned about HMD because of them being filled with old Nokia employees and that they'll use the old Nokia strategy of a phone at every price point (seems like they're doing this already). I'm concerned for Blackberry because of pricing. I'm concerned about Google as they're still after Apple users and I may need to start referring to them with the iPixel line.

So with all these gripes, am I on a flip phone? Nope. I use the Pixel 2 as outside of the no headphone jack (major), no manual mode (semi major) and smaller battery (semi major), it's got the best combination of what I can use and stomach right now. Especially since Google has gone the 3 & 3 (3 years of major OS updates and patches).

While there are other devices I own and like using as individual devices (HTC 10, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2) and there is still stuff I'd try (Nokia 8, V35, Asus ROG, Key 2), but we've got what we've got. Lots of OEMs make hardware I like, but the combination of hadware, company approach and software support I want doesn't exist right now.

I think my beef will always lie equally between OEMs and my fellow consumers. Rant over.

This is very true, I agree. I guess in their minds, only some care about those things.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

When you're bleeding money (HTC, LG) or restrurcy and bleeding money (Sony for over 10 years), listening to both your core audience and watching the market correctly is the balance to be walked. Sadly, Sony, HTC, LG, Moto didn't do a good job with this and are where they are now.
