WC 1M Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

I think the S10e would make a nice upgrade for the GF from the Note 5. Size wise, I think the S10 is the best fit for her, but I don't think she'll be as forgiving with the optic finger print sensor. I remember how harsh she was with the Note 5's reader initially. Even now I still see her use her PIN periodically. Also, not sure about her and the curved display. Surprising to see that so far the S10 has the worst battery life of the three.

But she's been with Verizon for as long as I have been with t-mobile (over 10 years), so I she can get a good deal if she decides to grab one. I would have suggested the s10+, but I don't think she'll got for the palm rejection issues and the optical fingerprint reader too well.
Costco has a BOGO deal ($750 back over 24 months via bill credits of course) so if you can get someone else on her plan to go along then you can get her a S10 and S10e as well. Verizon stuff finally works with TMO out of the box.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

I would recommend it if she doesn't mind the smaller footprint and the missing stylus. Looking at the size compare, it seems like the S10e is slightly bigger than the Note 5 when it comes to screen size.

Do you know if she uses her phone with her right hand or left for unlocking? It's not a huge deal but as a left hand phone user, the fingerprint on the side is a little tricker to use, it seems a little more ideal for those who use the right hand to do that.

She's ambidextrous I think. I told her to just go with play with all three in the store...and stated what I posted here. If this was last year I'd have told her get the S9+, but she kinda doesn't need all that power this year. The S10+ for her only makes sense if she plans to not buy another for for the next 6 years, which I wouldn't put it past her. She does keep her devices a long time as her last four were going from the Moto Droid to Droid Bionic to S4 to Note 5 (I met her with a Droid Bionic but saw the Moto Droid laying around).

Ooh okay, gotcha.

Wow that's long!

She'll find a way to hold Verizon by the balls and get a good deal. She got her Note 5 64GB model for about $300 on contract with shipping and tax included 1 month after it was launched. She was trying got be cheap and get the 32GB model and I told her not to do that.

She's had the Note 5 virtually since launch. She likes it (not an S pen user though) and I bet if she could get a battery swap, she'd keep using it. But it is showing the age now. I think a S10 model would work for her instead of a Note.

If she's part of a multi line plan and likes to keep the device for a long time, $750 off is a nice price.

She used to be. Had her mom on it until she got married and went on her husband's plan instead.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Samsung is full of surprises. Out of the blue, they decide to release a successor to my one of my favorite phones that I still own but can't use. The Galaxy A40 is what it's called. By dimensions, it's a little taller and narrower than the S10e. Idealistically, this would have been the update I would have considered going for if the S10e wasn't a thing.

It has that OnePlus style notch, 4gb & 64gb storage but the selfie cam is an obnoxious 25mp. I'm glad that Samsung is offering a slightly smaller phone in the midrange and upper tier lineups. They are doing what Apple has chosen to leave behind (and yet, they can release the mini 5 but that's another topic...lol).

I'm pleased that I went for this, as crazy as it might have seemed to be (with the logistics involved with also doing a carrier switch as well). On that note, I have nothing else to add, aside from being a fan that Samsung has a silent mode that doesn't involve DnD or vibration. I think I might get a new case though because the current case makes it close to the height of the X(in my pocket, that is) and it's really protective but feels a little bulky.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

So found out the Nokia 9 is available here for €699.

I still want to see it in person though along with the new Sony X1 whenever they decide to bring it out. I think the Sony X10 is out. I'll take another look at the XZ3 while I'm at it.

Still no clue what I want.

If you are liking the current Sony device you have then by all means try out the new X10 or X1. I still think that based on the type of pictures you take you do you might like the Nokia N9 and actually even a Pixel device.

I don't want to wait 20 seconds for a picture to process so until they fix that then I'll think about it getting the Nokia 9.

Not sure about anything else currently. The Sony X1 isn't out and there's no real reviews yet.

I may just get a XZ3 for now but then I don't know. Not really interested in a Pixel.

I see you're more likely to buy a Lumia 822 from 99 before you buy a Pixel from Google.

I doubt anyone has really had the X 1 yet. Sony has been notorious like LG for announcing phones and not launching them soon. It's nice to see them launch the X10(+) so fast so maybe there is hope.

Don't know why they didn't put Qi in the phone. Don't understand OEMs fascination with slim phones. This whole societal push for "slim is in" annoys the hell out of me.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

As for me, I'm still in the land of wanting to try something new but being restricted by my wallet. The G7+ has been solid, it's just the whole ****ty battery life and lack of proper US radios kills the experience. Been vascillating about getting a V35 on the cheap and maybe I still do, but it hasn't moved the needle enough to do so.

Guess I'm at a point where my priorities are the same. I'll have some LG device in the stable to handle audio. Supposedly a G8 would be good for me but knowing LG, we will get the two camera instead of the three cameras here in the US. Never seen a company so good at getting in its own way like LG. At least HTC and Sony can claim being stubborn but LG just screws itself so well its almost impressive.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Perhaps I'm in the minority, as I just feel that the camera on the N 9 is like the Lumia 1020 and Pureview 808, where it's such a showcase feature that trying to shoehorn it into every set up is really doing it a disservice. In the right hands, even the 808 now can still take some very good shots.

If I look at it from a certain lens, the lack of micro SD/the 128GB storage is concerning. If they had gone the 256GB route for the same $699, it would have been more appealing for me. But I don't think they designed it to be a camera that you fully push, as they would have added more storage and ultimately a bigger battery. I wish they would have put in OIS in all lens, but Pixel 1 showed us what good EIS can do for video. Android one is a nice touch, I just would have preferred being able to switch the display resolution to 1080P and the nav bars back to the three button layout.

Would I use one as a daily driver? Sure. I really, really like the screen. It impressed me as much as the one on the XZ3. I turn on reading mode on all my screens so I was impressed at how well the screen on the N 9 looks. Am I excusing any shortcomings of the phone? No. To me the shortcomings are storage, battery size, audio for music, OIS. I just feel not everyone is looking at the phone in the appropriate context and trying to compare it to all sorts of other offerings based on the price point.
Maybe it's just me, but it seems like the 9 has been a success in the aims of generating buzz, and trying to stake out a point of differentiation from others in the camera space. HMD knew it wasn't going to make this first Gen product a mass market device by controlling the number of units available.

I really, really want to see a Gen two product - similar in the vein that the 1020 led to the 950 camera. Something like 3 lenses with all OIS (2 color + 1 mono/ 1 color + 2 mono / 3 color at different focal lengths) and a bit more balanced take in the sharpness and processing speed. Looks like the 9 also reminds me of the earlier Leica cameras on Huawei phones where the focus was more on stills.

Phone is interesting to me. Would love to try it at $500.
