Hey all,

This may marginally pass an Android-bashing thread, but my intentions aren't so.

Ok...here is a question:

What keeps us busy the whole day? Work? Wife? Kids? Studies? Yes, most of that. Almost. Now add to that a phone. A device that should ideally help/let us communicate with the whole world.
BUT, imagine this: back from work, away from the wife and kids, taking a break from studies, do we really need to relax or do we need another reason to rack our brains and break our heads with our phones. Flashing ROMs/Tweaking and Modding/hacking and jailbreaking and what not.

Phew...One busy life.

We have, somehwere, forgotten that we are end users. We are not phone developers or coders. And we need to respect the difference. For the last 7-8 months, the amount of knowledge I have gained is huge no doubt. But at the cost of what? My health? My relationship?

This is where I realized, I need to stop, I need to jam on the brakes.

You might wonder where does WP come in.

A Windows Phone gives me time to do all of that I need to do in my free time. When I am done with work, I can socialize for a while. When wife is away, can play some games to kill time. When commuting, listening to music.

In short, it lets life be what it needs to be, life.

This is my biggest reason for buying a WP8 (when it comes out.) What's yours?

PS: Mods, I have a feeling this could be the wrong place for this thread. I apologize in advance and request you to please move it wherever it should be.

Thanx!

I agree with you, but the fact is that some people actually have fun flashing roms, tweaking and moding, hacking or jailbraking their phones on their spare time... no one can blame them... to each, his own.

Also (and probably this isn't a very acceptable thing to say), there is something about this hacking/jailbreaking thing that I like, which is being able to run hacked apps on your phone (yes, without paying). I'm currently a Symbian owner and I know it's a shame but I've paid for probably only 5% of all the apps that I have in my phone. I'm certainly going to miss that when I go WP8. My wallet will suffer the consequences or my phone will not have half of the apps that I currently have because paying for every app that I want would be expensive.

First off, there is a difference between "having to", and "wanting to", do things to make your phone work as you need it to. But as poiman points out, some people look forward to the challenge, and that can be a good thing. Anything that exercises the brain is good for you.

Just don't think you should have to do the research and tinkering in order to enjoy the full capability of a device. The out of the box experience has always got to be the baseline for comparison. No apps, no tweaks.

I feel the same way, as I'd like to find an OS that meets the majority of my needs as a stock platform but offers the apps I need to fill in the rest of my desired functionality. That is one of the big draws of Windows Phone as I like the fact that I can pin only my most commonly used apps to the homescreen yet still be able to get information at a glance from the Live Tiles. I always hated having to use someone's iPhone in a pinch, only to find out that they have 7 pages of apps for me to sift through.

To be very very honest, I think so too. My wallet will have to bear the brunt of me trying to get away from flashing/modding...

Hmmm..

On the BlackBerries I could flash numerous times a week, I could even make my own themes. After doing that for more than a year I Also called it quits. Cold turky, stock ROM, stock theme, stock apps (except for berryweather). And it was good, I learned what I really needed from a phone. (certainly a better browser than the BB) Most apps just fetch info from the internet and mobile sites are getting better by the day, so You do not really need the app.

That is one of the reasons I never hesitated to jump onboard with WP. It has excactly what I need and a pretty good browser.

Why do you keep writing "we"? I truly respect your opinion and your priorities, but that is just what the are; YOURS.

If you did loose control and the phone took over your life, too bad for you, but that doesnt mean there are not millions of guys and girls out there enjoying flashing, tweaking and coding while they have no problem living a otherwise rich life.

For some people their car i just a vehicle. I on the other hand like to tweak and experiment with cars. Often without a real purpose, just for the sake of havning fun and most important, the satisfaction of learning things.

Many here seem to think that the whole Android community is just millions and millions of frustrated people spending every night trying to get a phone that works like they want. You almost look down on them because they were stupid enough to not buy a phone that works "out of the box". But they are just people with an genuine interest for computing, smartphones etc. It is not different from being interested in building models of old ships, collecting hockey cards, playing tv games and so on.

And to be honest I dont really get this fascination for a 100 % perfect "out of the box" smartphone. One phone cant be perfect for everybody. If I buy a smartphone once every second year, use it everyday for many different situations, why would it be such a pain to spend the first evening to customize, install apps and make it "your own" and then enjoy it for a couple of years?

Fair enough. I agree. It did cross my mind sometime while writing it. But didn't give it much attention. You are right.
