I would like to see the source of this.
I explain it here in more detail.
http://wmpoweruser.com/the-denim-extrasinfo-bug-might-be-by-design/

If you have a Cyan/Black Rom and a Denim ready low-end phone you can try this for yourself. Or check the MS website for availability.

Here was the experience that prompted me to investigate. I had a phone that was denim ready(625) but I had flashed it to a Black ROM to experience the old Music + Videos hub for a while. So while I started the long update route, I got Cyan(Lumia update for WP) and 8.1. Then I got 8
1.1. Note that I hadn't let any of my apps finish updating in this time. When I got the 8.1.1 update, extras + info had yet to update and my firmware read Cyan. After I let everything update overnight, my firmware was now reading as Denim. No Lumia update had come with the 8.1.1 update (it was the same as the DP build) and the firmware numbers matched the Denim ID on the website. I flashed to a different ROM and got the same results. Then I checked the build numbers individually(I have free time )

Oh and I asked Tom Warren on the verge as well

Tom Warren isn't a credible source. You need to have a source that comes directly from someone at Microsoft. Because from what I understand if they matched the Firmware string from the OS version then that is fatally flawed. They would of matched the Firmware version with the Firmware string. Not the OS to the Firmware.

Have a look. Cyan and Denim have the same firmware

It is correct. Older devices get no firmware update in Denim, just OS. Those on DP are actually ahead of Denim. Source... Check the firmware version numbers on the Microsoft Europe list. In some places BOTH Denim and Cyan are listed for the same phone. Only OS changes, firmware does not.

If you're in this situation, turn off DP and you'll effectively get Denim.

Kind of sucks but Denim is really only a firmware update for the newest phones. We don't entirely know which ones except 930, 1520, Icon. For other phones its an OS only update. Obviously since Microsoft haven't detailed this entirely, some phones may still get firmware updates too but as a whole I'd say not.
