I have a 2010 13" MacBook Pro which is pretty much broken and looking to upgrade. Does anyone know if this is comparable to the new MacBooks? So far from reviews, looks like 2017 Surface Pro is the way to go. Has anyone done the switch? Or are they too different?
I haven't personally done the switch, but I know for sure how different those two beasts are. In my office there is a mix of MacBooks and Surfaces...
The older MacBooks like yours have a complete port array, so if you are planning to switch to a Surface Pro, you will also need the Surface Dock, unless you can manage with just one USB-A.
If I were you I would go for the Surface Book because it has similar connectivity to the old MacBooks and it is the direct competitor.
The display on Surface is better, though I haven't compared it to the newest MacBook Pro (they both seem on par)
Performance wise, it all depends on what system you choose... but the Surface Pro with i7, have Iris graphics, a slightly less powerful version than the ones inside current MB Pro. Surface Book on the other hand will smash the MacBook (unless you compare it to the quad-core 15"). MacBook's SSD and RAM seem to be a little faster too, but you will never notice it.
Battery life between the newest Surface Pro, MacBooks and Surface Book seem to be all very similar... The older Surface Pro 4 had worse battery life.
I love my current Surface Book (1st gen)... I have had to deal with glitches and quirks, but it is still the best laptop I have ever used... and I am looking forward to the SB2
