I'm curious what the typical battery life is for a Surface Pro 3, primarily the number of charge cycles it can take on before the battery begins to drop in quality.

That's a bit of a hard question.

If they used a typical Li Ion battery it would be 500 to 1000 cycles. All depending on how well the battery is treated of course.

If they used some other tech then it could last longer but most portable devices are not expected to last more than 3 years. I'm not sure about if the Surface Pro 3 fits this category or not.

Still it depends on how you treat the battery at the end of the day and how the Surface Pro 3 handles charging.

Manufacturers of said batteries don't even know. Panasonic released 'some' information on their Eneloop range of batteries that showed up to a 10% variation in the number cycles. Tests involved operating the batteries at different temperatures, 'top up' charging and 'flat to full' charging.
