What was Nokia's (and Microsoft's) STRATEGY behind yesterday's announcement?

That so-called hush-hush event has news sites buzzing about it... either criticizing the video demo or praising the camera and design. Aside from a few generally Apple-biased sources, and the "fake demo" comments, I haven't actually seen much negativity from the press. Also, FYI, there were quite a lot of people there from the press... I even saw a French girl from Cosmopolitan there for the news event. Just saying.

And I get that you or anyone else may not like the design, but that's why there are options. That's why Microsoft and Google have traditionally done so well. They saturate the market with choices in their fields. Apple gives you the Ford Model T experience... you can have it in any style and color you want... as long as it's black (and sometimes white).

I don't like the design?? I loved it man...don't misquote me. At least not someone as respectable as you.
Yes, everybody may be talking about it..but talking what? Doesn't that count??

Why do we have to fall back on gaining negative criticism and be the butt of all the jokes?

Why do we need to rely on such gimmicks? Don't we have an enough USPs to boast??

Common man...

Sorry but I don't see any strategy in coming on stage, announcing 2 phones (which were already leaked), no date, no pricing or carriers.

If u call this strategy, I don't knkw what will you call iPhone's presentations.

Sometimes a strategy will fail, but it's still a strategy. That was my question for this thread. What do you think the strategy (failed strategy in your opinion) is/was? If you don't want to use the word "strategy", what do you think the INTENT was?

Sorry, I meant "you" as an example not as an absolute. I apologize.

Anyway, I think Windows Phone (and subsequently Nokia) are still very misunderstood as a platform. That's why I say a lot of the criticism is on Microsoft. People comment on it as being weak or limited having never tried it or just hate of Microsoft.

Just remember... Microsoft, even as a giant, is often the underdog in a market, and NEVER underestimate them. It takes a few attempts, but third time is DEFINITELY a charm for this company. :)

To be fair, people certainly Rolling Thundered a lot when their Lumias didn't work as advertised and needed constant updates or hardware replacements...

Based on the folks from Nokia and Microsoft I got to talk with Wednesday, I have to believe yes, it's very likely they're holding back.

Could that have just been PR to maintain interest? Possibly. But I'm choosing to be optimistic about it.

Can't comment on whether Nokia/MS are holding something back but I can see your point about maintaining interest. I see their strategy as this:

  • Can we release the phones before 12th September? No
  • Ok, lets get people interested with an overview of what's to come and try and sow a little seed of doubt in people's minds before they decide to buy their next phone.
  • Let Apple announce the new iPhone
  • Give it a few weeks for everything to calm down and then remind people of what Nokia/MS have to offer, this time with concrete details on price/availability/WP8

MIF5% of Apple fans disappointed, because they have heard about Nokia, Apple, camera, and then they may consider switching.
