WhatsApp audio messages volume

How do I control the volume when playing back audio messages in WhatsApp ??? If I use the volume buttons, it controls the ring volume for the phone and not the audio which is currently being played.

No. That doesnt work. 99% of the people in this forum have WhatsApp. How do you lower the volume of the messages???
