Why cant we download over 20MB from marketplace with our data connection, why it requires a wifi?

This has been answered before. I believe it was due to preventing too much stress on the network. Of course, it probably is more to help stop people hitting their data caps too quick, but for someone like me that has truly unlimited data, it isn't exactly an issue. The other reason I believe I saw was for battery saving reasons. Again, take these with a pinch of salt, this is just what memory tells me.

Or I can just turn on internet sharing with my gf and get what we want.

A stupidly annoying process but sometimes warranted.

The iPhone used to have the same issue, I'd guess it's a carrier forced limit. Something Microsoft have to implement before the carrier will allow wp8 devices on their network.

iPhone is still limited, but it got bumped to 50mb.

Android has no such restriction. At least none of the ones on AT&T seem to.

I've done that on iPhone. Tether my net book and let it download the file. You can also stream most media, such as podcasts even though you can't download them.

I'll have to try that on my Windows Phones if I can get Hotspot to work.

They really need to make this an option, some of us can manage our data fine. That being said, in the absence of that, they really need to increase the cap to 100MB or so. There's too many times I have to stream podcasts instead of downloading them, just because they hit the arbitrary limit.

I can usually download a 50+MB file if needed...wasn't able to download crimson dragon today but then that is 200 :)

I would guess it is somewhere in the carrier agreement as well, especially with folks on certain providers holding on to grandfathered unlimited data, and now with LTE speeds rolling out more and more I am assuming the carrier is trying to nudge heavy users on a WiFi network or tethering device so they can hit you with another charge.

I can just see it in the UK... 5G - ?250'000'000 for 5MB of 5G data! I still use my trusty old 3G. Here's hoping when Three becomes Four and gets 4G they do The One Plan still except with unlimited 4G.

Was able to download Red Bull Kart Fighter which was 37mb. Cellular connected at 3g speeds. net10/straighttalk at&t sim unlimited plan.

I know in the past I usually could not download over 20mb via cell.

Maybe it is a few factors. Carrier dependent, spectrum, connection speed..

Anybody else on net10/straighttalk able to do the same...

Edit: 50mb is limit over cellular data

You guys are just wrong on this.

MS removed the 20MB cap (and dev documentation) on this last year. It is (and has been) <50MB now for some time (at least on WP8). Will do a post to clarify.

I've always just viewed it as a "hey, don't be an idiot and wait until you're home to download this." type thing.
Sent from my Nokia Lumia 920 using Board Express

It still needs to be about double that, though. :D

This is bull****. I have "unlimited" data (30GB) and I canno't download 80MB app over 3G.
Im getting more and more frustrated with this Lumia phone. Can't belive M$ cannot even release fully working Skype for it.
Apart from Nokia maps, getting Lumia wasn't the best idea..

It's not Nokia fault or Windows. Neither android or apple can do that. It's limit from store. 100 MB on apple it's limit and android the same. Nokia rocks ! You can download from third party any size you want over data phone.

Dunno about WP 7.8 at this time, but on WP8 Microsoft officially lifted the cap to 100 MB. WP7.8 should have at least 50 MB.

It's something from their servers anyway.
