I think Surfaces are great for uni particularly if you need to write equations or draw diagrams in notes. It's amazing how OneNote looks and if I was a uni student now I'd love to use it.
That being said, you need to also consider practical things like will the Surface or Surface Pro actually fit on the tables in the lecture theatres where you take notes? I found that even my Surface 3 struggles to fit on some tables for example airplane tables in economy class. I'd also add that the SP4 uses a dedicated charging connector which you're unlikely to find easily at uni unless everyone has an SP - at least the S3 can be charged easily by someone else's phone charger, or even a battery pack.
