Where do we go from here?

Every iteration of the iPhone and Galaxy Devices is not something they radically changed so much as they improved on the last gen model.
Good point. But even if the iPhone or Galaxy update is only incremental, it seems to happen every year and I don't think you see critical features removed.
With Nokia/WP it always seems like two steps forward, one step back, one step sideways. Between all the series and the carrier variants, Nokia has released like 14 different devices since I got my 920 at AT&T. Yet it looks like my 2 year contract will expire before I see a straight-up one-to-one upgrade. If Nokia had followed the iPhone/Galaxy approach, I would have seen a 930-like device (with Glance) in AT&T last holiday season- and that would have been nice. But no; we got the 1520 (one step sideways) with 16GB and no Qi (one step backwards). Then this year we might have seen a more substantial redesign of the 920, with some improvements over and above the 930. They just have too many damn devices.

I'm seriously considering the HTC now that it will apparently be available on AT&T before the end of the year.

I, like many people have talked about recently, got a Lumia 920 in november a couple of years ago, and now my contract is about to end..! I keep reading this over and over again in the comments and in the forums but I thought I'd make a specific thread for it..

The 920 has been a great phone for me, does everything I need it to do! The wireless charging has been amazing and the OS has got better and better (in my opinion) with recent updates. I just can't see any phone that's out there at the moment as a true upgrade from the 920 (besides the 1520, but that thing is far too big for me) - I've even been considering going back to using an old Nokia E7, just because I miss physical keyboards!

There does seem to be some new phones coming out soon, the HTC One W8 (tomorrow..?), the Lumia 730/830, each have got some interesting perks, better cameras, different designs, etc. I just don't feel like there's any really interesting options out there at the moment, what does everyone else think?

If you're not scared you can give a shot at Blackberry Passport. I deem it to be a very good device. I may go for that as it supports also all Android apps WP is missing.

Yep, im getting soo fed up that im not going to wait for MS to come to Europe, im going to move to California instead :D

So you're going from an area where there is low WP take up to an area where it's virtually non existent?

To be honest here. I could never live in the US personally. Just doesn't thrill me in anyway and that's not even going into the issues I have with it.

On a happier note, being a person who's lived (immigrated) to four countries now it's an experience. One of the countries I lived in was Finland. My wife is half Finnish and she has relatives living in Nokia town. Yes I've been there. :)

Having seen the HTC M8 with Windows now, I would want that phone...you know, if it was released in the UK. Anyone think it'll come to the UK before November?

Other than that, I'm probably going to have to go with what other people are thinking of doing, just waiting till next year when WP9 comes out. I feel that Microsoft/Nokia are most likely going to be preparing a 920 successor for that platform (920/820 first for WP8, XXX/XXX first for WP9 - with all the bells and whistles that people are asking for...and hopefully released worldwide!)

I own an IT recruitment company and the US is a target market, im also fed up of rubbish weather in UK so looking at sunnier climates and I love Vegas so being close is cool (i think). Nokia (now MS) is also a client of mine and have supplied many candidates to Espoo Finland, cool place :)

The first line was tongue in cheek.

I have friends in California and San Francisco and been there a couple of times. I've been to Vegas once, not my kind of place. But to each their own. My friends have had enough of Cali so they're planning on moving to Vermont.

I lived in Australia for 7 1/2 years so I had my fill of sunny hot weather. I'm more of a cultural type person and the EU suits me better. :) I don't find the UK weather all that bad personally. :)

It's wierd their is no real device that is a clear upgrade over the 920

the HTC One is close but it's camera is worse.

I've also had my 920 almost 2 years and would really like an upgrade in all aspects before I move to another phone.

I just got my 920 a few months ago and even though it's nearly a 2 year old product now it still feels like a top of the range model and I dont really wish for any other phone. I'm sure in time it will be bettered but I think it will last me a good 2 or 3 years, I hope.

It's hard to make one master phone, because people prioritize different things.

I'd argue that both Samsung and Apple have managed to produce good flagship phones and each generation is a clear improvement over the last.

How do consumers typically choose smartphones? If they can afford it they always go for the flagship; the Galaxy S5 or iPhone 5S. If they can't afford those they get the model that's a year or two old. They don't waste their time poring through a dozen variations.

Nokia, on the other hand, has flooded the market with countless variations. It's like they're stuck in 2001 when they used to flood the market with all kinds of weird designs, hoping cellphones would catch on like a fashion accessory. The 520, 920, 1020 and 1520 all make sense. They fill respective niches appropriately and offer all the options a consumer could want. If Nokia had focuses only on those models they would have probably had more resources to proper generational improvements instead of all these half-steps.

The 600 series makes sense too. Samsung have plenty of lesser models.

So true. When you upgrade your phone, you don't expect that some things will get worse.

L920 was an all around phone. Cost was reasonable and what it brought (gloves display, low light, OiS) was far ahead, sadly now i see only bumbs on MP and Socket.

I agree with you about HTC. They burned me with the Titan also. Poor support. Horrible reception. They told me that using the phone while it was plugged in was considered "abuse".

Haha, my abs.. I have stitches.. that is just too damn funny...

In the end, as my 920 only had a 4 hour battery life, i upgraded to a sim only contract and bought a Nokia Asha 210 - i wanted battery life ?nd keyboard! Still waiting for microsofts next flagship phone, most likely will come when windows 10 is officially releasd!

Wow 4 hours really sucks, and I thought my 920 with 15 hours sucks :-/

Changed my mind, My friend has a M8 Windows phone from Verizon and oh my word I love that phone, I might miss some of the Lumia exclusive APP's but it will be worth it, and now that it is going to be on AT&T i'm going to trade up, If you are not a phone camera junky you will love it to, I personally think the camera is fine .

That makes me feel a little bit better :). My 920 has been great for the past 2 years except the battery life. It lasts only about 10 hours now. I guess that's normal since it may be too old. Waiting for the next flagship with Windows 10
