Which firmware to use?

The last update doesn't like my phone (or my phone it). And so far after much reading, the only solution I've found is to reset the phone to factory defaults and factory firmware.

The problem is I don't konw which firmware to use.

Most firmware is carrier specific but my phone is from Virgin Mobile (small company) with no branding on the device or Virgin features on the phone.

So is this phone retail? (Therefore I use a retail firmware).

Is there a way of finding out? I don't want to use the wrong firmware and brick the phone.

I think VM use T-Mobile podsnap, but not sure if you used that firmware, your SIM would work or not with the T-Mobile UK firmware, I don't see why not though.

The only negative thing about using the unbranded Omnia firmware was that Samsung still haven't pushed the tethering option for it, it has to be network branded for tethering to appear. (Unless they have at last caught up)

What's up with your phone ?

Thanks TheWeeBear, it just won't update to the 7740 update.

It goes through the motions but seems to skip the last few steps and gives me a 80180048 error.

There is a thread on MS Answers but so far the only 'solution' is to reset your phone with firmware and update from scratch (and lose all your data etc...) :(

VM use the T-mobile network but I think that's as far as the partnership goes. There is zero branding on the Omnia 7 and to be honest, I like it that way, I don't want some carriers naff software dumped on the phone (or worse, nasty start up screens).

Just not sure what to do. Don't really need tethering at the moment.

Thats a pain podsnap, nothing's ever easy is it.

I must have been lucky, of all the ROM flashing I done, i never had a single update error.

Well I haven't flashed it yet. Just not sure which firmware to try.

Unfortunately, I can't see any other solution, so I'm probably going to have to pick one and try! :(

Sorry for the noddy questions TheWeeBear but if I flash it and it doesn't work will I be able to use the backup on Zune to restore it to it's present state?

Or at least flash it to another ROM?

No I don't think you will podsnap as I think zune will see it as a different phone, even if you rename it the same name.

It's not a noddy question at all podsnap, to be honest I'm not 100% sure.

Yes you can flash it to any ROM you like. I had T-Mobile Germany, Unbranded, 3UK.

You can flash it to any carrier of your choice.

Thanks for the info TheWeeBear, I'll have a think.

I'm worried there is no specific VM firmware and since VM always asks if my phone is an Android when I speak to them I hold no hope of getting anything from them.

Trouble is, if I don't flash it, it looks like I won't be getting any more updates! :(

Yes i can feel your frustration podsnap, I think i would go with the UK retail ROM if you don't desperately need tethering although it's annoying if they still haven't pushed that update to unbranded Omnia's

Just makes me wonder if the 7740 and 7801 would be delayed too.

(7740 wasn't out at the time i was unbranded, so didn't have it)
