In the case of the Lumia 1020, I believe 1GB is available for the system and 1GB is reserved solely for the 41MP camera...

True... But it is an important distinction, IMHO, between system available and total RAM. I make the distinction on PC all the time if the onboard GPU uses system RAM or has a dedicated RAM of its own.

This is true.

When checking total RAM with most diagnostic apps they will report that the 1020 has 1 gig of memory total.

That 's not changed that it has 2GB of ram.
The ccamera is the part of the phone

Personally I think it's a bit disingenuous.

You could just as well smash an extra RAM chip into the back of your case and say your device now has more RAM. Purely in terms of hardware, it does. It just makes absolutely no difference to the user experience, because just as with with the L1020, the OS is completely oblivious to its existence and doesn't use it.

No you don't.

The fact that t1GB reserves for the camera mean the other 1GB didn't have to store camera process.

If you put extra chip like that tthat's not even close. In this case it's more like when you have 8GB ram on PC and it says only 7.85GB usable while the rest are hardware reserves

IMHO your analogy is very much flawed.

Instead of dissecting it, I'll throw just one more argument your way before giving up. This is what the L1020's spec sheet would have looked like, if we lived in a world where technical accuracy was more important than marketing:

RAM:1 GB
Camera:41 MP, Carl Zeiss lens, OIS, Xenon Flash, additional 1GB of dedicated VRAM

This is quite similar to how specs are listed for PC's with dedicated graphics cards. Have you ever seen a system with a dedicated graphics card, where the spec sheet summed the system RAM and VRAM capacities and listed them as a single spec? No, you haven't. Why not? If you know anything about graphics cards, you'll have no problem coming up with multiple reasons why that's a bad idea, and every one of them also counts as a reason as to why it's also a bad idea when done for the L1020.
