The issue is with non AT&T customers who buy them out of contract, since you are a customer and I assume your account meets AT&T's unlock policy you got it without a hassel.

That works unless it doesn't. Tried what you did for my L920, failed. Called them. Failed again. But good for you just the same.

or you could have an unlocked 1020 and when it fails and you get your warranty replacement ATT refuses to unlock it (personal experience)

could i get details on that? (whether here on through PM)
I have a paper to write for school and I'm pulling together information and I think your situation may help.

Was there a reason given? Did you complain or what?

Good for you; but for every one of you there are 100's of others that failed. I own (paid for all of them when I got them) three NOkia phones, a 820, and two 520's and they all have been refused when I tried to get them unlocked. I plan on changing to T-mobile; but if I have I will buy three unlocked phones to do it. I will never own a locked phone again. I have been with AT&T for 9 years and it did not matter one bit.

Yeah, I did the chat with international support on both my Lumia 920 and 1020 and it went flawlessly. No getting questioned to no end. Just mentioned that I'd be traveling internationally and provided my IMEI on both devices. Unlock codes provided immediately.

Simple as that.

If there is a way to handle this when you bought a locked product but brand new at full price?

you should be able to unlock it immediately, or so I remember.
at the most it would require 60 days of activation
Luckily I was an AT&T customer and I submitted my info to the unlock site... i will see the results in two days

If you are with at&T, then it's easy. It took me two tries to call for my sister, because she needed a French SIM, because she is in France for 5 months.

IM trying to unlock my nokia 1020 and its impossible . you have the code? can I have it? let me know thanks

where i can unlock it? thanks

If ATT won't let you have one, you could potentially try to pick up a code from a third-party, like a small shop or website like cellunlocker.net (won't vouch for that site, dont have firsthand experience)

but be prepared to pay for it. I had a local shop quote me $70 for my ATT 920. And that was only if it was out of the 2 year contract period.

Assuming you're in the US.
