Who Supplies Cyan?

Nokia 920 from AT&T, unlocked (not factory), used on AIO/Cricket. I have the developers 8.1 update installed. I have seen that Cyan is under test by AT&T. Who is supposed to supply Cyan in my case, AT&T or AIO/Cricket? Is there going to be such a thing as a developer's preview of Cyan?

Since you have an AT&T branded device, you'll get the Cyan update when AT&T releases it.

OK, I can believe that but just how does that work? Since my phone is on the AIO/Cricket network (AT&T owned), it has an AIO APN. So, just how does AT&T or my phone know where to get that update? When I go to settings and check for updates who and how does the phone check with? The only way that I could think of is if AT&T were to have some sort of database of IMEIs. The same question goes for factory unlocked phones, how does Nokia or Microsoft know which phones to send the updates to while bypassing the carriers?

The device's firmware determines where the phone gets its updates.

An originally AT&T device with the original AT&T firmware will only get its update from AT&T regardless of current carrier.
My AT&T 920 has been flashed to a French unbranded ROM. (It acts as if it was bought unlocked in France) The firmware isn't tied to a carrier, so it gets updates direct despite being on AT&T service.
Your 822 only came in Verizon, so there's only one firmware, if I understand right, so your update will come from Verizon.

Thanks that's great info. So I can assume that clicking on "check for updates" will go to where ever the firmware that is installed came from, correct? That leaves me with one last question, are software updates ever really "pushed" or are they in fact requested? By that I mean my phone doing a periodic check for updates would find available updates from whoever is specified by the phone's firmware and that neither Nokia nor Microsoft would have a means to push the updates without a query from the phone. Otherwise, vendors would have to have a means of knowing which phone to push to.

Phones check periodically and it isn't "pushed" per se.
