Why are only some apps connecting to their networks, while others just quit?

WPCentral Question

Some apps don't connect to their networks anymore and just quit.

I seem to have an issue on my Lumia 1020 running WP 8.1 Update with certain apps that I've had for awhile, specifically Trainr and Hanyu.co. The apps work fine for awhile, but suddenly they just stopped working. I'm not sure if it's because of my phone or because of the apps.

Both apps require logins and connect to a server. With Trainr, I get an error, "Cannot connect to server." With Hanyu, the app opens to the splash screen and then quits.

I thought it just might be the apps individually, but considering that this has happened to two apps, I'm starting to suspect it's something else. I've restarted/shut down my phone multiple times but nothing seems to help and the apps just don't work anymore, which is a shame since I really like both.

Is anyone else having the same issue? Does anyone know a solution? Thanks!

It seems that the problem for these two apps are different. While Trainr is network-related, that may not be the case for Hanyu (which I also have installed in my L1020 with the latest 8.1 preview update for developers).

If more than one app is encountering a network-related problem (don't count Hanyu in yet), then try switching Airplane mode on and off quickly, to reset the network connection of your phone.

For apps that crash before or while the app splash screen appears, try re-installing the app. If this doesn't fix the problem then it must be an issue with the app (especially if it has not yet been updated in a long time - some compatibility issue through outdated APIs with the newer OS versions?).

On a side note, some of my apps (weather apps) have stopped updating by themselves (even if they have been enabled in the app settings and in battery saver). But, manually backing my phone up (Settings > backup > apps+settings > back up now) caused those apps to start updating again. You can try your luck by doing this, but it may take a lot of time for the backup process to complete depending on your bandwidth and the number of apps installed in your phone.
