Why aren't the windows 10 office apps free?

I thought they were free for screens under 10 inches but it keeps prompting me to get office 365. The old apps were free so why do I have to pay up now?

Right now for me it's free to view documents but says I need office 365 to edit.

Maybe you're missing an update. Go check the store. They were locked down way before, but since like a few months ago, they're free to use on ANY Windows 10 Mobile device.

I'm on the latest build. I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling.
