Why can't I hear anything while making or receiving calls but if put on speaker mode sound is back?

why cant i hear anything while making or receiving calls. but if put on speaker mode sound is back.

my lumia 730 is inaudible if not put on speaker mode while making or receiving calls

You might have a bad microphone.
