Re: So what made you pick a windows phone in the first place?
A few reasons - firstly because of Google's attitude to Windows 8, I like the convenience of the live tile and notifications on the Windows 8 Mail app - so when Google started to remove things like EAS and screw around with Microsoft, that makes it harder for me to use the software I like. As I spend the majority of my day sat at a Windows desktop - my priority is the experience on Windows. So I went all in, and ditched Gmail for Outlook, started using SkyDrive, moved my calendar across, etc.
Next was my phone. I was already an outsider with Android. I liked full QWERTY as my first smartphone was a Nokia E63 - I dropped that for my first Android (LG Optimus), but then jumped over to a Palm Pixi. I loved WebOS and having a keyboard back was great. After HP ruined things, I eventually made the jump back to Android, with a HTC ChaCha running a custom rom to get Android 4 - it was a crappy experience but a hardware keyboard was my priority.
I finally decided that I would give full touch another shot - I had considered just accepting some of the shortcomings and grabbing a Pre, or even going to a Nokia E6 to get touch + type. But an impulse buy won me over - got a HTC 8S for $114. It's been a little over a year now and I've not for a moment looked back, the shape writing with the 8.1 update even makes me have no desire to go back to a physical keyboard.
I'll occasionally look up prices on moving up to a newer and fancier model of phone - but the phone is faster than when I bought it and still does everything I need.
