tried changing it from 3g to 2g but makes no difference talktalk mobile

It sounds like a carrier issue quite honestly, especially if you tried forcing 2G with no improvement. How is the signal? Do you get 3 bars or more consistently? Does it seem to hold on 3G or H+ pretty well?

You could ask for a new SIM or a reprovision...
