Why doesn't double-tap work on my new Lumia 435?

Tried tapping in a single spot, but not working,

Not all phones support double tap to wake. I don't know about 435, but check the touch section in the settings. If it supports it then the option will be there. If not then your phone doesn't support double tap to wake.

Make sure it is switched on in "touch" in the settings

And make sure the proximity sensor is not covered by anything.

Probably on the face of the device, towards the top, above the display.

Try cleaning that area, and remove any screen protectors.

If you are on a phone call, does the screen turn on and off properly? (when you cover the top part of the screen)
