Why doesn't Microsoft recommend it's own wireless adapter

I don't see why they should. Taking a quick look at the description, it seems remarkably similar -- except for the fact that it creates its own "separate" WiFi connection and doesn't draw on the standard WiFi.

I've been using the MS Wireless Display Adapter for quite a while and love it. It works great with my Win10 laptop and my BlackBerry devices.
