Why don't the volume levels appear on my screen?

Volume levels no longer appear on my screen

Before the update, I could hit the speaker shortcut button on my laptop and it would automatically turn on my volume to a preset level or mute the volume. Now, when I hit that button it does neither and it no longer pops up on my screen to show me that it is on or off like it did before. In order to control the volume now, I have to manually hit the plus or minus buttons. Anyone know a fix for this? Thanks!
