Why is my phone storage full when there is no apps or any content in it?

My phone memory is 440MB although i have a card of 16 gb and have transferred almost all the apps pics videos etc. when i go to storage sense i see a lot of memory is ate up by system apps email etc which i cant delete. Any suggestions about how to clear cahce and old emails and other such file to use the phone memory.
