Why is the Nokia Lumia 830 so expensive?

Wow...$380 does seem like a good price. I just saw the 830 for $478(converted from baht) at a Nokia store in Thailand.

Different countries have different prices because of taxes , exports , deals with carriers and stuff like that . Just depends on location I guess :)

My 920 was quite snappy when I bought it but I now it's not quite so fast and so people asking about the s400 in the 830.... Well... doesn't seem like such a crazy question....

Fair enough. "Future proofing" I think is the only thing to be worried about with the S400. But I think there is significant evidence that MS is not the kind of software company to develop to top specs only, leaving poor UX for everyone else. Particularly in light of the 520 being the single most popular WP.
That said, I used an AT&T 920 with official Cyan and WP 8.1 and I thought it was quite fast.

People are jumping to conclusions. If S400 gives a great experience in the OS the phone ships with, any other means of comparison is completely invalid and arbitrary. XYZ Android phone with S400 for whatever money has no bearing on cross shopping.
Trying to get the most GHz, cores, memory, and general specs for the least amount of money is how you bought a computer in 1992. This is not 1992, and these are smartphones, not computers. I don't see smart shoppers, I see people getting all wound up over nothing.

I dont think anyone is saying S400 is bad, what they are saying is S400 is bad for the price they are charging

The 830 runs well... at least what I can tell just playing with it at the store. If they had just put in a 800-1 then there wouldn't be this question about the upcoming windows 10 or whatever they will call the next big update working on this phone. This is what keeps me from thinking about buying this phone.... Yes its a very nice phone, but since my 920 still works well I will wait until the next mid-upper/upper phone comes along.

They actually announced features at the same event which the S400 in the 830 is too old/underpowered to take advantage of, so no, I don't think it's unfair that people are reluctant to buy into an old chipset when Microsoft itself is showing that the L830 hardware is already lagging behind the software feature set.

I agree, the lack of "Hey Cortana" feature is disappointing, but what other features are missing? I look at the 830 as a way to afford a brand new phone with the latest WP version and Lumia firmware, off contract, for a reasonable price. I can't speak for other countries, but I expect this to be $299 on AT&T off contract. The overall package is very compelling for $299 and it would be completely unreasonable to expect the same phone + S800/801 for the same price. And frankly, the 930/1520 seem too buggy to be worth my time rolling the dice.
This is the kind of phone I expect to see for $50 on contract or even less. That's good value, but the better value is buying it outright. Certainly I'd prefer a 1080p phone running the very latest SoC, but I don't see that as a viable option. I'm not going back to contracts or paying $500+ off contract for a phone like that. Maybe others are...

I'm not using my upgrade for a midrange

I believe if I were in your shoes, I would do like I've recommended others; buy an iPhone or high end Android on contract and sell it. Your net gain should be more than enough to pay for an 830.

@kevm14, many of the camera features announced are also unavailable for 730 and 830. Not that I'm planning on using 4k video. . .but bottom line is, features were announced that will not be available on a brand new "affordable flagship" phone.

I've got my fingers crossed that the 830 will be $299 as that will make it (happily!) my next phone. I'm very, very doubtful of that price. Guess we'll see in a few weeks!

That's true. I'll think about that route

L1520 your best bet... Now only cost less than usd400 for a new device... None of any current latest release Lumia able to beat its spec... Drop that bs big/huge size dumb reason bigger the better...

I was almost sold on the 1520. It's perfect in so many ways, except two MAJOR flaws: way too big, and serious bugs. You can get them used on eBay for less than $300. But I think there's a reason...
Also, 4k recording would be nice but other than having higher res stills to grab from the video, I have no reason to record in 4k (other than as a bragging right, and since I'm 15 years out of high school, I'm good).

My humble request to all those actually defending Microsoft/Nokia for their pricing is to please STOP.
There is no way you would convince anyone by any kind of argument. The most irrational thing to say is that despite S400, 830 is quite snappy. Hello... so is the Lumia 530, 630 and 730. Why call 830 a 'affordable flagship' when it is neither affordable nor flagship? I have given comparison with Moto-G on several forums. It has similar specs and comes at half the price. Nexus-5 has better specs than 930 and comes at less than two-thirds of the price.
Moreover these phones run on android which is a far more accepted OS worldwide. You are not Apple that people will pay premium just for the 'snob value'. You are targeting consumers at the lower end of price range but want to price like market leaders i.e. Samsung and Apple.
I am deeply saddened at the fact that Microsoft is not using its deep pockets to reduce prices and gain market share. 830 and 930 have not set any sales chart on fire and they never will at these price points. 930 should be at 830's price point and 830 should be at-least 30% cheaper for people to have a look at these. Otherwise, the sales will be as low as ever and with increasing market size the market share will continue to shrink : as is the case over the past year or so.

It's too big ;). Not to mention has 1 out two slight but annoying hardware issues like the infamous swipe/tap/scroll bug.

It is called FLAGSHIP because it has all the flagship features from nokia/ms (ok apart from "hello cortana" and 4K stills are captured in 2MP), oh wait... even more features than the "true" flagship 930 (Glance, SD, ...).

A phone is not just a processor!!!

This Swipe/tap bug put me off getting a 1520 for ages but for the last 2 weeks of heavy use after getting mine I can honestly say I've not experienced this a single time. I dunno if I'm just lucky or if it's been fixed in the latest updates?
