Why isn't my Nokia Lumia 925 checking for updates?

Nokia Lumia 925 won't check for updates

I have a Lumia 925 on AT&T and every time that I try to update it to Windows Phone 8.1 it tells me that there are no new updates and that the last time it checked was 8 months ago. I hit "Check for updates" and the phone does not respond to it. Is there any way to update my phone using my computer, or to bypass the update screen?
