Why isn't my phone notifying me of incoming messages?

It has been okay since I purchased it, but a couple of days ago it stopped notifying me of incoming messages. All other applications like whatsapp are working well except the messaging app. I have checked and rechecked all the necessary settings, but nothing seems to work. What could be the problem? I am using Windows 10.
