Wifi connectivity error on whatsapp

I have been using the Lumia 520 for over 4 months now and although WhatsApp had a lot of bugs, WiFi connectivity wasn't an issue. But for the past 2 days I have not been able to send or receive messages on WhatsApp via WiFi. It seems to be working fine with the mobile data though. The connection status reads "Not Connected" in the settings screen when WiFi is on.

If you've used the app with mobile data then it won't switch to wifi unless the app is closed and started again, on gdr3 you press the close button, on previous OS versions you press the back button until the app is closed. Then open it again and see.

I have tried restarting my mobile, switching to aeroplane mode and also reinstalling whatsapp. Nothing seems to be working.
