When using the Shadow can the internet be accessed without subscribing to T-Mobiles internet service, in other words, will any free wireless signal work, ie. Metro-fi in Portland, my home router, ect.?

Yes, but I believe the low price of the phone is dependent on signing up for a data plan.

I bought my son a Shadow for x-mas. Wi-fi surfing works fine, no data plan.
