Will not upgrading to Windows 10 Mobile prevent me from getting universal apps?

So That's my question. I'm running W10 Mobile on one of my old phones, but not on my 1520. So I know what windows ten looks like, how it functions, and what it gives you.

the thing I am wondering is about universal apps, I know all the buzz makes it sound like this is brand new to windows 10, but I thought we had universal apps in WP8.1 for a while.

I do know I cannot get word mobile, and excel mobile - but are these just artificial limits put on by microsoft? (not that it will matter in the end)

So I'm curious, will the apps for windows phone 8.1 slowly dry up and become outdated like many Windows Phone 7 apps? or will it be able to use the same apps that are coming running on Windows 10 mobile?

Windows Phone 8.1 has universal applications...in a sense. But not like Windows 10. Not to the same extent or power.
Unless a Windows 10 Mobile application has been optimized for Windows Phone 8.1 it won't work, as far as I know.

The answer will vary depending on the footprint of the OS and what choices the developers make.
For instance there are probably developers that still make apps for XP. Especially in countries that have the pirated versions of the OS.
In this case, if you were looking at a graph of activity, you will probably see Win8.1 app development on a downward trend, while app development for Win10 be on an upward trend. As time goes on, both lines will slant to a larger angle...meaning more win10 and less wp8.1.
