Just a heads up... Has the 8X received 8.1 yet? Not across all carrier lines... Did the Lumia 810 get that promised 8.1 update as well? Nope... It was EOL'd instead. What about the carriers blocking the 7.5 to 7.8 updates? Yea, we've been down this road before.
Now, I'm not out to "scare" people - I've been most vocal about the M8 and how awesome it is. That said, I am not going to expect the update - and if/when it comes, I will be very happy. Instead of the opposite happening in that I would EXPECT the update and not get it and be pissed.
Overall, the M8, once I figured out the reboot issue was caused by a loose SIM tray, has been the best Windows Phone I've owned. It's better than the Focus, Focus S, Surround, Titan, Radar, Lumia 900, Lumia 710, Lumia 810, Lumia 920 and Lumia 925... I'd put it on par with the performance of the Lumia 1520, but give the features a higher rating. What I am trying to prevent is the backlash when the US carrier don't follow through since they only sold "x" number of units.
Yes, people can register for the Dev Preview, but then things like your DuoCam or BoomSound might stop working. Worse yet, if there is a fundamental change in the programming that the HTC firmware doesn't accept, then it could just brick the device all together.
Again, not scaring anyone off, it is the best WP on the market today in my opinion - and I am happy with it running 8.1. When I get a 10 preview and like it, I'll let people know, but until then, it's the best WP 8.1 device around and I'm happy to carry such a great device.
