will the surface pen stop working if it needs a new tip

My pen was working last night, I took a ten minute break and when I picked it up again it wasn't working. I changed the battery and repaired it, but the tip isn't being recognized. The eraser end still is though, so I know the pens not totally broke. Could the problem be the pen tip?
