Is it safe to delete the windows.old folder? I tried deleting it but everytime a box pops up saying that i need permission from "SYSTEM" and it doesn't move to recycle bin

Google 'take ownership right click'. Once downloaded, extract folder and install registry file. Right click windows.old and select take ownership. Once cmd command has finished you can delete it.

Or download cc cleaner, once installed select delete old windows installation files. They are safe to delete.

I used the built in windows disk cleanup tool instead. It was much easier

It is easier, but it doesn't always work.

My go-to method to resolve issues like this is to use Linux. It doesn't worry too much about Windows permissions!

Yeah it's safe to delete "Windows.old" as long as you plan on not restoring back to Windows 8/7
