Windows Phone abroad

One day I might find something good to say about Windows Phone (something that someone else hasn't said), but with less than 5 hours of today left, that probably won't be today.

Today I'm posting about taking your phone abroad. Last time I did this I was hit with a heavy bill on my return. Why? Because Windows Phone only allows roaming to be on or off. If you turn it on, everything suddenly downloads everything it can. A very expensive mistake on Microsoft's part - though only for their customers. If you want to search while abroad, you'll have to download the Bing image of the day. You'll also have to have your email synchronised, and check for app updates. The list goes on.

What I do is turn on Battery Saver, as this turns off much of the "always connected" stuff that Microsoft pushes so much. Being developed in the US, it's no wonder they don't think about crossing borders much.

Another topic related to the "Big America" mindset, is the lack of automatic translation for social updates. Microsoft has their own translation service, but they don't integrate it into anything except for Bing Vision. Of course the implementation would be awful, because they'd never think to spell check the original language before running the translation. Stringing two thoughts together is something that the Windows Phone dev team seems to struggle with.

So there you have it. Windows Phone abroad. The worst of all contenders?

I don't know why you travel abroad without an unlocked phone. I always travel abroad with unlocked phones so I can pop in a local SIM card.

I've also looked through your post history. It's all doom and gloom about Windows phones. It's time for you to get a different phone.

Not sure why you don't just use WiFi when abroad. The iPhone is just as dangerous to use as are all phones. Unless you want a large bill keep data roaming off and use WiFi and voice only.

This is no different than using an android phone. All you social apps will run in background and download. You must have known that you pay while on roaming so you could have disabled apps running in the background or email check. I don't see the point you are trying to make.

I fully agree with the fact that this was not solved well. But the funny thing is it's actually the same on iOS and probably Android.

So wait, you own a Windows Phone, but can't find a single day to say anything good about it? lol.

Simple solution to that problem i would have thought.

If he had an Windows Phone he would know that he can block apps from running "behind" and he knew he could switch emails for "manual" and sync when WiFi available. And so on...

Err my dad does have a Lumia 800, but doesn't know about this sort of stuff. He's not registered on this site though. Not every WP user is as geeky as us.

Nothing wrong not knowing.
What's wrong is complain without trying to know.
There are a lot of WP communities with all the different Q&A

I travel alot around the world. Just back from Singapore, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Thailand. I simply switched 3G to off and Wifi on. Better safe than sorry. Not a single euro spent on roaming abroad. Its exactly the same as any other OS platform.

What do you mean only On/Off? Why not to set "don't roam" in Data roaming options and do not use data in roaming?

You are absolutely correct . Unlocked phone works abroad . If a phone is locked with any network, you need to unlock it to use with abroad . to get unlock code from your carrier or from any of the online vendors like TheUnlockSpot.com to unlock it . Unlocked phones can work with any other GSM carriers internationally .

There are also several new options to protect you in GDR2 and 3. When I roam in Europe I have it set to not use data if the WiFi isn't working properly, To minimize background data when the roaming is on and have also cut down the amount of background tasks running. Data Sense also helps with this.

The phone in this setup is absolutely miserly when it comes to data usage.
