Hi all, I bought a Lumia 640 Gophone and had it unlocked. I want to use it with a local sim when I travel to Hong Kong. I think talk and txt is no problem, but can someone tell me if it can get 4G there? Or would it be 3G only?

GoPhone 640 has all the bands available in the ROM as being active right out of the box...

GSM quad band which is the world standard
3G Bands 1 (2100) / 2 (1900) / 4 (US 1700) / 5 (US 850)
LTE Bands 2 (1900) / 4 (1700/2100) / 5 (850) / 7 (2600) / 17 (700) / 28 (700)

Depending on deployment and carrier, you may not even get 3G... Research your carrier and check not only frequency, but bands.

I'm still confused myself but the ATT website lists these bands for the GoPhone 640: LTE Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 17.

What carrier do you plan to use there in HK?
Three or China Mobile. Used China Mobile before but Three has a deal with Whatsapp so it doesn't count against data for msg, pics and recording, only cost HK$8 (US$1.20). That's how we communicate in HK so I think I'll go with Three.

My 640 GoPhone when accessing Field Test Menu shows LTE Bands 2 /4 / 5 / 7 / 17 / 28.... Does your phone show something else?

Here is what I find for GoPhone 640 on ATT site: https://forums.windowscentral.com/e...repaid.html%23sku%3Dsku7680350&token=hUrjyQNL

A lot of times in NA you do get the 900 MHz for 3G/H+, but GoPhone firmware seems to have neglected it. It's of no use on ATT after all...

Again, when accessing Field Test and selecting manual network mode, all available bands are enabled. There is nothing "extra" to turn on and the radio is:

GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Bands 1 (2100) / 2 (1900) / 4 (US 1700) / 5 (US 850)
LTE Bands 2 (1900) / 4 (1700/2100) / 5 (850) / 7 (2600) / 17 (700) / 28 (700)

Yes, the field test screen of my phone shows those bands checked too. So the 640 would probably get 3G via 2100 or LTE via 2600 on Three. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I used my ATT 1020 in HK on 1010 (CSL) and had 4G. Just a reference point and hope it helps. Also, it roamed when I was in PRC but no data.

Thanks, that's great to know. I hope to be able to use the 640 as hotspot for the tablet so 4G would really help.

I'm not sure if you're interested in this, but the dual sim version of the Lumia 640 has many more bands available:

2G bands GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 - SIM 1 & SIM 2
3G bands HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100
4G bands LTE band 1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 12(700), 17(700), 20(800), 28(700), 38(2600), 40(2300)

The dual sim Lumia 640 LTE runs about $160. It is one of the cheapest dual sim phones that covers the most cellular bands.
