Would I get firmware updates on a country variant Lumia belonging to another country?

Hello! This is my third post related to my Lumia 830.

I had bought a Lumia 830 online few days ago and received it day before yesterday. When I turned on the phone for the first time, Mandarin language was pre-selected and also there were many Mandarin Chinese keyboards (including Traditional and Simplified) installed. I began to doubt for why it was so.

Then I checked the firmware details and my doubt was cleared. The mobile operator was 000-HK. That is my phone was imported from Hong Kong! It's not the Indian variant..

Yesterday, I read the article on Windows Central about Lumia Denim being rolled out to Lumia 830 in India and many users confirmed it.
But, my Lumia 830 hasn't received it yet.

So, the main confusion I have is that "are the firmware updates dependent on country variance?" If it is so then would I have to wait until Lumia Denim rolls out for Lumia 830 users in Hong Kong?

Or, since I have set my region to India, would I get the latest firmware within few days or so?

Please suggest.... I am dying out of curiosity :unhappysweat:

Yes, that's exactly how it is. Your ROM country/carrier variant is what matters for updates. Region settings, language settings, or where you're at are completely irrelevant.
You have three options:

A) wait for the HK country variant update to be released.

B) return the device.

C) Flash the Indian ROM (what I would do).

You will receive Denim, but only when it's rolled out for the HK country variant. In what country the phone physically is, doesn't matter.

Very bad.... very bad.... very unfortunate :crying:

B) return the device.
C) Flash the Indian ROM (what I would do).

I cannot return the device as I have no genuine reason like the damaged product, etc.... eBay,..... I bought it from.

I don't want to do anything un-genuine with my only-two days-old phone. So, flashing is not even an option for me! Also I'll lose my warranty.
I'll rather wait for Denim's release in Hong Kong.

Isn't there any other way, *ANY* ??

OR If I choose to flash it then please do tell me what is the difference between the following:-

059W4W4: RM-984 VAR IMEA IN CV D GREY
059W4W1: RM-984 VAR IMEA IN CV SLV

What I know about the above terms is:-
1.) The first column shows NaviFirm product codes of the country variant ROMs.
2.) The second column is the Lumia 830 model number.
3.) "VAR" doesn't matter.
4.) IMEA stands for "India, Mid East and Africa" region.
5.) IN and CV stand for India and Country Variant respectively.

What I don't know is the emboldened terms "D Grey and SLV ".....

Please do tell what they mean so I could proceed further with flashing my Lumia 830!!

There is no difference other than the name of the ROM. Use whichever you like, or most closely matches your phone.

Oh.. so, I'll get the silver one. As my Lumia 830 is orange

I'd be interested top know how that works for you. I am about to buy either an 830 or 930 with no idea the of country variant until it arrives. I too would be needing Denim, so I may also need to flash the ROM.

Firstly, the best thing is to buy it from a retail store or from an online store which is "not at all like eBay"!! eBay has bunch of same products having variation in features, listed by many different sellers (including non-reliable ones). You may buy it online only if the website lists only one product of its kind (but may be sold by multiple sellers which are generally affiliates of the online store firm.)

Still if you plan to buy it elsewhere and if you are unlucky enough like me to get a different country variant, head over to this article to learn step-by-step information to flash your Lumia.

#Important:- The above article will guide you to flash a Lumia 920 with WP8.1 Lumia Black ROM. Hence, you need to just refer it and not completely follow it. For example, for any Lumia except 920, you need not download the in-article stated "Rogers Pre Portico ROM" as it is only for Lumia 920. You'll have to, instead, search Google to find the right NaviFirm+ ROM for your Lumia (I found my Indian ROM for NL830). Rest all is the same as stated in the article. Read it carefully, before proceeding and during the flashing process!

Get the correct NaviFirm+ firmware product code here:- For Lumia 830 or For Lumia 930 or Any Lumia

Good luck! :excited:

However, I have lost my warranty :(

Doesn't matter much though. I'll use it carefully. ;)

Not really. MS tells people all the time to flash their device, for example when going back to WP8.1 after testing W10M. They don't lose their warranty either.
Even if it were that way, just flash the HK ROM back and nobody will know the difference.

What if I need to get my phone replaced? Would they mind flashing it? Because, the screen of my phone has popped out a little at the top. So, I am thinking of getting it replaced. How about it?

I've heard of many instances where Nokia support stores in India flashed customer's WP devices for them. I don't know if that's a general policy though. You'd have to ask.
