This is how MS works a lot of the time. We saw it with the Xbox, the first round out of the gate was lack luster, but got units out in peoples hands. They are doing the same thing with WinPhone, get the product out and keep plugging away at it, making improvements all along the way.

It's only been 8 months now and I am confident that as more normal people (read: non techies) get a hold of this phone they will love it. The techies, the tweekers and tuners may be slow coming to WP because the OS runs beautifully on lower grade hardware and they are too caught up in the specs.

Don't get me wrong, WinPhone needs a breakout device. Like Stephen Elop said, he "wants a device to make people drool on the display case". More memory, high end camera, LTE, HD Radio... then the big time wish list item.. a Lytro camera... if you have not seen these, WOW...brand new tech that's going to change photography soon. Bing lytro camera. This is a good podcast about it too...

An interesting concept for photography to say the least, however, I highly doubt that technology will be coming to smartphones anytime soon. The reason I say this is because that light field camera you speak of most definitely seems to be the next generation movement of photography, however smartphone OEMs have yet to even implement a working high quality current gen camera into their devices sure HTC is at about 8 mp with some of their devices, but with the optics they use and poor quality sensors they have, those pics end up looking like a 1.3 mp flip-phone camera took it. Anyways, all exaggerations aside, Nokia seemed to be the only one doing anything about the issue with the N8 camera having nice Carl Zeiss optics at 12 mp. Now however I dont know where they're headed with that as the successor to the N8 (the N9) received a REDUCTION in the camera department from 12 to 8 mp... That actually followed a recent announcement stating that Nokia will now be outsourcing their manufacturing to Compal, whom don't do a good job at it in my personal opinion. So when this technology will be reliably incorporated into smartphones in a useful manner is hard to say.

That would be exactly the point of putting it in. Hey, I am in tech, I know that sometimes these things dont move very fast, and I know that phone cameras suck. Conspiracy theory: The camera makers are conspiring with the phone makers to make us keep having to buy both.

It would be a WOW factor and if you work with this guy now before they REALLY take off, it will be cheaper... still expensive, but cheaper.

Dude I just finished talking about how Nokia works with Carl Zeiss to get awesome cameras in there phones... I honestly believe the OEMs put mediocre optics for cost effectiveness. Leaving room for people to still buy dedicated cameras yes, but I know I don't. What I think would be nice is to have a high quality standard of smartphone cameras somewhere between 12-16 MP, where freelance photographers that aren't really looking to go big time, have the ability to take high quality pictures without having to buy a dedicated camera. Then, if/when the photographer in them wants to take over, they can at that point buy a dedicated near pro quality camera of at least above 20 MP. That's what I think. That lytro idea is awesome though.
