Your Phone app won't work if pc and mobile on same WiFi network

I'm trying to connect my Xiaomi Mi 10T lite 5G with my Lenovo Yoga 3 laptop running W10. Both are on the latest updates. The problem is the phone/laptop won't sync if they are on the same WiFi network but will connect if they are on different WiFi networks (works with mobile on my home wifi and my laptop on my VPN WiFi). Can anyone suggest what is happening? I've pinged both devices to confirm - one is 192.168.x.x the other 10.11.x.x. Bluetooth is working correctly connecting the mobile to the laptop. Any hel[ much appreciated.

Two things that I've found is that sync is more reliable if I turn wifi off on my phone and turn QoS off on my computer (which can be found under network adaptor settings). It still has issues syncing reliably, it's just better now than before.
