So much of WP8 is bundled with the OS that it's impossible for Microsoft to update apps without going through the carriers. I'm really excited that Windows 10 is going to separate more apps from the core OS. Instead making more apps "universal apps" that MS has more control over. It's much like what MS did with Xbox Music, though hopefully without all the pain and tears.
Theoretically it should put MS closer on par with Apple when it comes to software updates. Imagine having Office, Outlook, Photos, and numerous other apps updated whenever Microsoft wants to. No carrier approval needed! As far as I know there's no official list of apps that are being unbundled from the core OS but I'm interested to see!
