I can't wait until Windows 10 releases us from our carrier overlords

So much of WP8 is bundled with the OS that it's impossible for Microsoft to update apps without going through the carriers. I'm really excited that Windows 10 is going to separate more apps from the core OS. Instead making more apps "universal apps" that MS has more control over. It's much like what MS did with Xbox Music, though hopefully without all the pain and tears.

Theoretically it should put MS closer on par with Apple when it comes to software updates. Imagine having Office, Outlook, Photos, and numerous other apps updated whenever Microsoft wants to. No carrier approval needed! As far as I know there's no official list of apps that are being unbundled from the core OS but I'm interested to see!

Things like e.g. the calendar were separate apps for a long time but didn't see any major improvements. I don't know if that will change in the future

Still, core of the OS would be required to pass through carriers hands. And there is potential that apps separated from OS core will be now slower, prone to lagging, more hardware dependent. Will see, but I think it is like sword with two edges, may turn either way...

Also, preview for developers is a thing: Once 10 is formally released we won't be seeing more updates for 10 than we already get from the preview.

I hope Microsoft adapts Apple's style of updates

Not happening. Ever. Not even Apple, if they had to renegotiate the deals they got back then, would get carriers to play along today. Like HeyCori said, unbundling as much as possible from the core OS is Microsoft's best bet. The second best bet is the Insider Program.

It feels more like Android style. They separated out many of the big updates from OS updates long ago.

I was really turned off Apple updates with the iPhone 4 and iOS 5. So many features we're iPhone 4S only. Yet they sell that iPhone 4 got iOS 5. "you got 197 of the 200 new features, it's not our fault you only wanted the three we won't give you."
