I know a lot of them are very similar, but is there an obvious leader of the pack in terms of battery life? And how does that compare with the palm pre if anyone has both.

Honestly I think the hardware is about the same. I would look for one that has the biggest stock battery..

The LG Optimus 7 batery is pretty darn good. I hear good things about the arrive like it was say above it. As long as it's not Android it can last you a day. Iphones are also great in that regard.

Since most of the hardware is pretty much the same you can consider that generally the larger the screen the faster the battery will drain (given the same capacity battery). But then you have to remember that LCD displays will be constant whereas a phone with an AMOLED display should perform a bit better than an LCD when using the dark theme and a bit worse when using the light theme.

That, and then take into account the size of the batteries, with I believe 1200mAh being the smallest, and 1500mAh being the largest. There was a chart floating around somewhere, but not sure where it is now.

Believe the Arrive has a 1500mAh battery, and a 3.6" screen. So unless one of the LG devices has it beat, I would say it's the winner.

I'm not sure what or how this happened, but I got a new battery (OEM) under warranty recently and my Surround can last about 30 hours before wanting a charge. Minus the days I workout and listen to music of course.

I also came from a Palm Pre Plus and now have the HTC Trophy. My Pre, with what I would consider average use throughout the day would be crushed by dinner time if I didn't charge it on my 30 minute drive home from work. I am really impressed with the Trophy's battery life. When I plug it in at night I usually have 40-50% left on the battery. I've been hitting the podcasts hard lately and even after draining my bluetooth earpiece with 4 hours of podcasts I can still make it through the day without a charge and still have about 20-30% left on the battery.
I have gmail and hotmail pushing out mail to me, average maybe 20-25 received, 4-8 sent daily. I don't do much browsing, I read a lot of feeds with wonder reader though, play maybe 20-30 minutes of some games. Facebook at least once an hour if not more with a little Twitter mixed in. Average on the texting and roughly 30-45 minutes of talk time a day.
I am really impressed with the batttery life!

Coming from a Pre, probably any phone would impress you with its battery life. hah

But honestly, Windows Phone is really solid when it comes to battery management. So even though they are running older/less efficient processors, they can hold up with the best in the pack.
