Hard reset and SD card

Hello ! I am a real new user of Windows Phone, and I need some help.
I have Lumia 820 updated with Cyan.
I know that an hard reset will erase all my files from the phone, pictures, music and videos. But what happens with an SD card ?
I mean the following: I have an SD card in my 820, and I use it for pictures and all the rest; on the SD card I have folder of documents, pictures (and subfolders: camera roll, saved pictures etc). I remove the SD card. I do an hard reset of my phone. I insert the SD card. Will I find all my files ? Or the phone will overwrite existing folders with new, empty ones (it creates the folders when I set "use SD card") ?

Some people say to remove the card, but I've hard reset my phone numerous times without removing the card and everything picks up right where I've left off. The card will not be touched, so just leave it in and let the update do its thing. Make sure you go into settings and do a fresh backup before you do the reset to have the latest and to also make sure the prior backup is not corrupting things.
