Ambient light sensor broken, but not broken.

Some of the features on my phone a broken such as glance screen doesn't turn off when face down on a table. Or when I'm on phone the screen doesn't turn off when I put it to my face. I do have a cracked screen and a major crack line nears the sensor but is not over the sensor. I downloaded the app, lux-O-meter and when I use the app it works perfectly. Which leads me to believe that the sensors not broken but somthing else must not be working. But for the life of me I can't think of what could be the problem. Any thoughts?

That's the proximity sensor that's not functioning, rather than the ambient light sensor.
